Wait! Follow This Guide Before You Quit Your Job
Do you want to quit your job?
Do you feel stuck in a career that’s not fulfilling or stimulating enough for you?
Before you send in your resignation or make a drastic decision, please take the time to figure out if quitting makes sense for you.
Follow this short guide before you quit your job.
Have a Well-Thought-Out Next Plan
You might not be ready to quit your job just yet, so take a step back and think about how you feel at work. Do you dread going in every day? Does it seem like there’s nothing good left for you on this career path? Or are you feeling unchallenged by what you’re doing? Perhaps you don’t want to leave just yet?
The first step in figuring out whether you should quit is to think about what your next plan might be. If you know the answer and want to make a change, then do it! But if not, don’t feel pressured into quitting before thinking thoroughly about other options.
Consider what you want to do afterward. Do you want to start a new business? Are you aware of the steps to take?
Many people don’t realize starting a business is just as challenging as staying in a job. You may need to set up an office and buy furniture, electronic accessories like a coil cord, and extensions, among other things.
Save at Least 6 Months’ Worth of Expenses
Ideally, you need at least 6 months’ worth of expenses saved before you quit your job. This includes any additional costs that may arise from your decision, such as replacing a car or buying a new house.
This cushion can help you feel confident that everything will work out fine. If you don’t have savings right now, then you might want to until you are better prepared financially.
It’s always good to have a backup plan. If you don’t find another job or start a business within 6 months, then what will happen? Will your savings run out? What about the mortgage? Ask these questions now to alleviate potential problems later.
Don’t Burn Bridges
A common mistake people make is quitting their job because of a lousy boss or company. When you have an opportunity elsewhere, it can be tempting to leave, but this may not be the best decision for your career. Before you go through all that trouble of finding another job, think about these points:
- Do I want to burn my bridges? Relationships within your field are important because they help you grow as an individual and foster creativity. Cutting ties means never returning if things don’t work out.
- Am I ready for this decision? It takes time to find another position with the right company culture, benefits package, and salary that will make you happy and grow professionally.
If your job makes you miserable because of a lack of growth opportunities or a toxic work environment, then give yourself time to think about what’s best for you.
