Top 5 Reasons to Quit Your Job

I loved many things about my old corporate job as a medical textbook editor.

Using my degree, feeling like my work was making a difference, traveling to conferences.

And yet, there’s a lot NOT to like about working for another company, which is why I’ve been my own boss for more than 11 years now.

It’s scary to make the leap to self-employment because there are many unknowns.

  • “What if I fail?”
  • “What if everyone makes fun of me?”
  • “What if I have to crawl back to my old job?”

But there’s so much freedom and excitement when you build your own business from scratch and watch it grow and thrive under your care!

5 Things I Love About Being a Business Owner

  1. No commute.
I had to drive my car and take 2 different trains to get to my fancy schmancy job. That was 3 hours every day! Commuting is almost unavoidable if you want to live in the suburbs but all the jobs are in the nearest big city. Now my commute is about 20 steps from my bedroom to my office.
  2. I choose my hours.
I had to be at my desk at 7:00 am every morning, which meant waking up at 4:30 am to not be late for my monster commute. Now I start work whenever I want and enjoy more “me time.”
  3. I choose my prices.
It was soul-crushing to have other people dictate my worth for years, and that’s one of the reasons I had to job hop just to increase my salary and get promotions. Now I choose the prices for my products and services and charge more than my old monthly income per client.
  4. I choose my clients.
As a books editor, I had to work with whoever was assigned to me, and that meant a ton of self-absorbed authors and doctors who thought they were hot stuff. Now I get to choose who I do and do not work with so there’s no more pretending to be nice to terrible people.
  5. I don’t need anyone’s approval to fix or change things.
Back in the day, I’d need multiple people’s approval to fix any problem. That caused numerous delays and made me feel insignificant because I had no authority. Now I’m the boss of everything so I can easily fix mistakes and make changes without going up the chain of command. Yes, it means problems are my fault too, but I’ll gladly take the blame as long as I can also take responsibility.

Those are just a few of the reasons I’m super happy to be my own boss and no longer tied down to the corporate world.
