Yep, I Got Divorced! How to Protect Your Energy During a Major Life Change

This is my most vulnerable video ever—I’m talking about my divorce!

I normally don’t share a lot about my personal life (I prefer to focus on my followers’ needs), but this was too big of a change to keep to myself.

If you’ve been following me for a while, then you probably realized that my business has been feeling a little off lately. Like something’s not quite right.

Hardly ever posting a blog or video, disappearing on social media, and generally not acting like the bubbly happy Sage I used to be.

Well, I’ve been going through some tough stuff in my personal life, and I’m finally ready to share it with you lovely Life Editors.

Yep, I got divorced. Sort of a big life edit, right?

In today’s video, you’ll learn how to protect your energy during a major life change.

The video transcript is below for your convenience.

Today we’re talking about how to cope when everything changes. Let’s go!

Hey there! I’m Sage Grayson, a former book editor turned life coach. I help ambitious career women edit their habits, routines, and mindsets to balance their happiness at work and home. I’m a Life Editor…and so are you!

Before I tell you how to protect your energy, please give this video a big thumbs-up and hit that subscribe button so you won’t any of my life editing tips.

This past year has been very difficult for me, and I came to the realization that my marriage hadn’t been working for a long time. Chris and I met in college, got married, and have been together for 17 years.

So why did we get divorced?

I’m not going to share all the private details of my life, but the short version is that we grew in different directions. I’m not the same person I was when I was 20 years old, and neither is he.

We tried so hard to make it work for years, but once we finally filed for divorce, it felt like this suffocating weight had been lifted off us. Oddly, we’re better friends now than we were when we were struggling to make our marriage work.

Chris and I are family, and we’ll always love each other. But it’s time for us to go our separate ways.

Yes, it sucks.

Yes, I’m sad.

But I’m also feeling happier than I have in years. Divorce was a life edit I had to make.

So what about you?

Are you going through a big change? Maybe you lost your job, or a loved one died, or you’re sick, or the world just doesn’t make sense to you anymore.

No matter how long and dark your path is right now, I want you to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Here are my 2 tips for protecting your energy during a major life change.

1. Hide the Baby!

When you’re going through a life change, you are like a newborn baby. A baby can’t fend for itself and it’s susceptible to all the diseases and dangers out there in the real world.

So parents keep their newborn babies inside for the first few months of their lives. That way they can be sheltered and kept safe until they’re strong enough to show up in public.

You’re feeling raw and vulnerable so don’t go putting yourself out there to be judged by others.

I didn’t want people butting into my business, recommending marriage counselors, giving me relationship books to read, or criticizing my decisions. Believe me, choosing to divorce was not a spur of the moment idea.

You don’t need to justify yourself to anyone, so hide the baby!

Give yourself plenty of time to work through your feelings and make a plan before you share your life change with the world.

2. Boost Your Self-Care

Of course I’m talking about self-care or white space!

It’s step 5 of the Life Editing Process, and it’s crucial for you to get as much self-care as possible when you’re going through a major life change.

Choose activities that give you energy instead of things that numb you out. I’ll share a link below the video for another video I did about the differences between self-care and self-comfort.

Sure, some days you might want to cry on the couch eating a whole bag of Oreos. Or maybe that’s just me.

But when you’re feeling up for it, choose to do something that will brighten your mood like watching your favorite movies, exercising, hanging out with friends, or being outside.

Next week I’m heading to Sydney, Australia, for a 2-week vacation, and I’m so looking forward to reconnecting with myself and focusing on my needs. It’s going to take me nearly 24 hours and 2 long plane flights to get there, but it’ll be worth it.

Are you going through a major life change? Leave a comment and let me know what you’re learning and how you’re coping.

That’s it! This week, be kind to yourself and honor where you’re at in the process.

Your life is always changing so you’ll always be editing.

Thanks for watching. I’ll see you soon.
