How to Make a Hand Frog

When I was a teenager, I used to babysit all the neighborhood kids. I had a secret trick that I would use whenever the kids would get bored. “Hey, do you wanna see my pet frog?” I’d ask.

Their eyes would widen, and I could tell they were thinking, “Did this crazy babysitter actually bring a frog with her?”

I’d bring my hands behind me, give the kids a secretive look, then whip my hands around and show them my frog.

A hand frog!

The kids were mesmerized by how I could bend my fingers into a talking amphibian. And of course, they always demanded that I show them how to make one too.

Here’s how you can make your very own hand frog.

The Hand Frog

Raise your hands in front of you with your palms facing you.

Bend your ring fingers and middle fingers behind your pinkie fingers.

I’ve been told that step 1 is really “be born with abnormally long fingers.” I’ve found that having flexible fingers is more important than length, and your fingers will get more flexible the more you practice.

Bring your index fingers down to touch your thumbs.

Bring both hands together. Your index fingers and thumbs make the frog’s lips (do frogs have lips?), and your pinkie fingers make the eyes.

Lift up your index fingers to make your frog talk. Ribbit!

Variation: The Demon Frog

Again, start with your hands up, palms facing you.

This time, only bend your ring fingers behind your pinkie fingers.

Bring your index fingers and middle fingers down to touch your thumbs.

Bring both hands together. Your index fingers, middle fingers, and thumbs make the frog’s lips, and your pinkie fingers make the eyes.

Pull back your index fingers to show your frog’s scary tentacles! Watch out for the demon frog!

Now, go be a “cool mommy” or “cool aunty” and show the kids in your life how to make their own hand frogs!

Ha! What a fun post!! I tried to get my fingers to bend like yours….. with no success. I’m not blessed with long finger, at all. I’ll keep trying, though!

It takes practice, and it gets easier the more you stretch your fingers. I have naturally enormous hands. I should probably learn how to play the piano too.

I love my hand frog. She’s easy to train and doesn’t eat much. 🙂
