Meditation Mountain: A Technique for Beginners

Meditation Mountain

Meditation is one of those things we tell ourselves we should be doing…we just never get around to actually doing it.

Kinda like flossing or cleaning out the hall closet.

There are plenty of thing that can stress you out during your day: traffic, gossipy coworkers, your misbehaving kids, a messy spouse, etc. Thankfully, meditation is an excellent tool you can use to help you relax when the world seems like it’s out to get you.

And meditating isn’t some woo-woo thing reserved for monks and hippies. In fact, you probably already meditate but don’t know it.

It’s a way to calm your mind and focus on the present moment. If you’ve ever stared at a beautiful sunset, a bouquet of flowers, or a pretty painting for a while without thinking of anything in particular—you’ve meditated.

If you’re a complete beginner to meditation, here’s my favorite meditation technique for you to try today.

Meditation Mountain

I use this meditation technique frequently, at least a few times a week. I sit comfortably either on the ground or in a chair (usually a chair because I have old lady knees).

I relax my shoulders and close my eyes. I imagine I’m an immovable mountain, strong and serene. I picture the sun breaking through the clouds and shining down on me.

If I’m in an ultra-hippie state of mind, I’ll imagine animals like goats and rabbits frolicking on my grassy slopes. But no bears.

Then I begin counting slowing in my mind. I inhale through my nose and exhale through my mouth. On the exhale, I think “One…” I breathe in again though my nose and exhale through my mouth and think “Two…”

I continue breathing and counting slowly while still imagining myself as a mountain. After 36 breaths, I pause for a minute, stretch, and then continue about my day.

See? Easy peasy.

Meditating doesn’t have to be complicated or last for hours. Meditating for just 5 minutes a day can greatly reduce your stress levels and give you focus and clarity to handle whatever life throws your way.

Next week we’ll talk about getting in the habit of flossing your teeth. Just kidding! That’ll never happen.

What a great technique Sage!! I have always wanted to meditate because I’m so neurotic and anxious all of the time but I just feel like I don’t know how to. This is a really great technique, I’m definitely going to give it a try!

I agree with Molly too, I love relaxing in savasana as well. It’s probably the only time I ever feel truly relaxed, and I never do it anymore. I need to get back on that!

Do it! You gotta start relaxing and taking care of yourself. It’s so important for your mental and physical health.

I love mediating in corpse pose after doing yoga. My favorite is to picture a stream with everything that pops into my mind washing away with it. So relaxing! 🙂
